Evadne didn’t think she’d ever been this nervous before. Not even on her first day as an ambulance driver in Belgium—then she’d been scared, she’d have been stupid not to be, but strangely nerveless.
She glanced at the clock on the mantel. Edgar should be arriving any minute. In an attempt to lessen her anxiety, she went over her plan again. All her invitees were in place: Uncle Charles, an ex-commissioner of police, sat comfortably in the large leather chair. Mr. Scrivens, her uncle’s lawyer, was standing to one side of the fireplace and James to the other. Sitting quietly on the window seat were Maria’s two eldest sons, there to provide extra muscle if the need arose.
Evadne glanced at her uncle, seeing disapproval in his look. She knew his opinion of what he called deviants, but she also knew his dedication to the law and to justice. He would do what was correct, despite any personal feelings. Scrivens would be even less sympathetic to Red’s problem, but he was there because he’d been paid, and paid well. Maria’s two sons and James willingly agreed to assist, as had Joe Martelli, who was in the adjoining room trying to calm a jittery Red.
The doorbell rang, and Maria answered it. For what seemed like ages, they waited, and then Maria showed Edgar into the sitting room. Evadne studied him intently as he took in the unusual array of people in the room.
“What is this all about, Evadne?” he asked, frowning a little. “You said it was something important.”
She could hear the puzzlement in his voice; she also caught a muffled exclamation from the room next door. Edgar also heard the noise and looked toward the door, then back at her, his perplexity plain on his face.
“Thank you for coming, Edgar.” She hoped her voice didn’t betray her nerves. “I have someone staying with me that I thought you might like to meet.”
This was Joe’s cue to bring Red in, and all eyes turned to the door as it opened and she stepped through. She was closely followed by Joe who was lightly holding one of her arms, though Evadne wasn’t sure whether it was in support or restraint.
Red saw Edgar immediately. Evadne’s heart sank as the expressions on both faces changed instantly. There could be no doubt from their reactions that Red was quite correct about the identity of her assailant. Red’s face went hard and flat but other than the clenching of jaw and fists she did nothing, though Joe’s restraining grip on her arm visibly tightened. Edgar’s reaction was far more extreme: his face went pale then livid with apparent anger and loathing. He swung to face Evadne.
“You have that abomination staying in this house with you? How can you stand it, unless—” Now he focused on the object of his obvious hatred. “Bitch, have you perverted another one of us? First Katherine and now Evadne?”
As he continued to rail against Red, Evadne was glad to see the Montoyas move up silently behind him.
